Coaches should be organized

Being an effective soccer coach requires a great deal of organization. Some clubs have team managers that handle scheduling games, referees and fields. In other organizations, all of this responsibility falls on the soccer coach. As many coaches have full-time jobs, being able to juggle their careers on and off the pitch is key.

As a coach, you need to be on time to your practices and have everything ready to go when your players arrive. A sloppy coach results in a sloppy team.

Coaches should be good communicators

Obviously, you have to be a skilled communicator with your players both in training and game situations. The good news is this is usually much easy than dealing with the parents.

Coaches should be a student of the game

No coach knows everything about every single aspect of soccer. However, the best coaches are constantly striving to learn more. They read books, watch coaching videos, attend seminars and talk with other coaches. Hopefully if you have coached for a long period of time you have a love for the game. If you are a new to soccer, it is my hope that you grow a passion for the beautiful game.

Either way, it is critical that you are always working to improve you coaching skills and knowledge.

Coaches should be good planners

This soccer coaching skill goes hand and hand with organization. Coaches should arrive to practice with a definite plan in mind. In addition, coaches should have an overall goal for the team. Each and every soccer practice should be building towards that goal.

If your main goal for the team is that they become fundamentally sound, then you should plan technical work in each session. If you want your players to know how to possess the ball for prolonged periods of time, then possession drills should make up the bulk of your practices. Players will need many repetitions in order to learn a new skill; one practice session isn’t going to cement a concept in place.

Coaches should be able to teach technique

This is a tricky coaching skill for some as not every coach is a former player. If you are unable to demonstrate proper technique to your players, it is critical that you find someone to help you that can.

Kids learn a great deal by modelling what they see. You don’t want them to pick up bad technique or habits from seeing improper demonstration.

Try to find an older player in the club or another coach to assist you with these demonstrations. Begin working on your own to improve your skills with the ball so that you can handle this in the future.

In order for a team to play up to its full potential, any good coach must teach how to attack and show what a team can do to maximize its chances of scoring. Everyone loves to score goals. But your team won’t score too many goals if the soccer attacking tactics aren’t refined. The main objective of an attacking strategy is to produce space and time in which to create scoring opportunities by using individual ability, quick, confident combination play and a constant movement of players. Hence coaches should attempt to create training conditions that induce players to develop their individual soccer skill while manipulating time and space.

Penetration

look to go forward past opposing players by shooting, dribbling, running, passing always try to score (if you can’t score look to make a pass – if a pass isn’t possible look to advance the ball by dribbling or running)

Depth/Support

support teammates by providing communication, creating passing options and opportunities for playing the ball forward, and creating numerical superiority (get open with good angle and distance of support, get goal-side etc.) help the ball carrier by moving to a position where you can either receive a pass or draw opponents away from an area the ball carrier is running into provide all around support and options for the ball carrier for both forward
spread out in all directions and stretch out opposition (unbalance defense) and safe backward passes look to combine (wall pass, overlap runs, take overs etc.)
use supporting players to change point of attack

Mobility

create working space for first attacker by changing position and drawing defenders out of their positions (create gaps and unbalance defense) runs off the ball to create good passing angle and distance for advancement/possession or scoring opportunity for first attacker runs off the ball to create numerical advantage and provide opportunities for scoring, advancement or possession

Width

use the full width of the field (players with or without the ball) and force opposition to open gaps by drawing defenders out of the middle and thus creating spaces for players to move into and advance

Improvisation/Creativity/Surprise

create opportunities for advancement, possession and scoring by making use of dynamic team actions (combinations etc.) and individual skills such as feints and fakes make the attack unpredictable to break down defenses through creativity and surprise in the right place of the field (creative movement on and off the ball)

They are known to have their idiosyncrasies when it comes to the numbers on their soccer shirts to which socks they put on first! If the earlier superstition led a team to victory, this next one almost caused a diplomatic disaster! Luis Aragons, Spains ex-coach, disliked the color yellow to such an extent, he once made captain Raul change the yellow jersey hed worn for training! And thats not all! Its said that during his career, his team went to Germany for a competition, and on arrival they were welcomed with a bouquet of yellow flowers, which the coach refused to accept!

Italian Giovanni Trapattoni, who coached the Republic of Ireland, Germany, Austria, Portugal as well as his home team, was often seen sprinkling holy water given to him by his sister, whos a nun! But he made sure to sprinkle it only on his part of the field! Another Italian, Gennaro Gattuso of AC Milan, went to such extremes during the 2006 FIFA World Cup that he wore the same sweater right through the competition! He admits it put him in the foulest of moods since he was sweating buckets, but still couldn’t get himself to take the sweater off! And if thats not enough, this midfielder would read a few pages of Dostoevsky before each game! This too developed into a superstition he found hard to break, just in case…

Leeds United ex-manager Don Revie was superstitious about a particular suit and made it a point to wear it to every game until his team lost while he had it on! English defender Gary Neville admits wearing the same shoes, belt, aftershave all season long! If hes on a winning streak, he refuses to change his boots! Even Chelseas superstar Frank Lampard confesses that he has his share of superstitions such as listening to the same music on the way to the stadium!

Getting back to another former Argentinean coach, Carlos Bilardo, not only did he wear a lucky tie, he also carried a statuette of the Virgin Mary to all games. And he banned his players from consuming chicken since he believed it brought bad luck! Bilardo had a weird habit of linking unrelated things to victories! His teams bus broke down once and they had to take taxis to get to the game on time. They went on to win that game and from that day on, Bilardo made his players arrive for games in taxis! He even made his 22 players file past a bride on her wedding day and shake hands with her one by one during the 1986 World Cup! Why?! Brides bring luck, thats why! The very next day, Maradona, who was equally superstitious about wearing the number 10 soccer uniform, led Argentina to victory against Brazil! Now, can you deny a man his superstition if it resulted in Brazils defeat?!
